Founded in 1991 in Sydney, Zimmermann exploded onto the American fashion scene in 2011, and has since become a staple in the closet of the chicest It-girls and style influencers. With a distinctly feminine style, and an emphasis on detail, color, and prints, the brand has been able to stand apart and expand globally in a big way.
Nicky Zimmermann, who founded the Zimmermann brand in Sydney with her sister Simone.
Part of that expansion includes Zimmermann’s first ever store in Miami, at Bal Harbour Shops, which finally brings a fully immersive Zimmermann experience to the city’s most stylish women. Ocean Drive chatted with one half of the sister design duo, Nicky Zimmermann, about the brand’s Spring 2019 collection and what makes Miami the perfect place for the Zimmermann brand.
What is the inspiration behind Zimmermann’s Spring 2019 collection?
NICKY ZIMMERMANN: For Spring, I was inspired by a television soap that was on in Australia in the late 70’s called Number 96. It was naughty and irreverent and hilarious. There were many things about the show that were so quintessential of the dressing in that part of Sydney at the time and for the Collection we’ve taken some of those elements and interpreted them in a modern way.

When you launched the brand in Sydney in 1991, did you at the time have your sights set on the global expansion Zimmermann is currently experiencing?
NZ: Not at all. At the time I was just thinking about how I could get started and get by from week to week. And I was really young, so I wanted to have a good time! There’s never been any big plan—we’ve just taken things as they come and tried to create collections that women want. But as we’ve progressed we have become more persistent and single-minded in wanting to bring an Australian fashion story to the rest of the world, and we have always tried to stay true to ourselves and our aesthetic, and that hasn’t really wavered.
What makes Miami a great market for the brand’s expansion?
NZ: We have always loved Miami and its energy and have spent a lot of time in the city over many years. With our aesthetic and our Swim Collections, Miami was always somewhere that made sense for us and we were going to open a store—it was just a matter of finding the right opportunity.

Why Bal Harbour? What makes Bal Harbour such a great shopping destination?
NZ: Bal Harbour is always a go-to destination for us when we’re in town, so when an opportunity came up to open our first Miami store, it just felt right. It’s just so easy to shop so many designers that we like in one place.
How does the Miami consumer differ from other markets?
NZ: The woman that shops with us anywhere in the world—be it in Sydney or London or Miami or wherever—have more in common than you might think. They’re feminine and like to have fun with fashion, and I guess that is particularly the case in Miami.

What trends do you foresee for Spring 2019?
NZ: I probably don’t think of things in terms of trends—I only really think about the things that we want to focus on in a collection. For upcoming Spring, we focused on our suiting. Safari suits, coordinated sports suits, linen suits, tracksuits and any statement suits that allow for a flamboyant play on mannish tailoring. Key prints like paisley and patchwork help in that modern reinvention.
What are your style tips for the Miami fashionista?
NZ: Style is a fairly personal thing, but I think it’s important to always have fun with fashion. Our Spring 19 Collection has lots of great prints and styles which can be paired back with sneakers or a pair of heels and layered with chandelier earrings or gold necklaces.
